As an illustrations contributor to the Daily Bruin, I work with writers and editors to conceptualize and draw illustrations to accompany stories.

Typically, a writer will provide a vague idea of what they want the artwork to contain. Based off their initial ideas, and considering the content of the article, I create initial sketches to be reviewed by the writers and editors.

The writers will provide feedback on initial sketches, and then I will fininsh up the drawing, going back and forth with writers, implementing minor edits and touch ups.

Some works function as the header to a column. These works appear at the top of each article in that column. Thus, the pieces must be representative of the entire column, rather than a single story.

Other works are done as part of a series of stories, and while specific to the story it accompanies, I try to keep some elements consistent across all works.

For example, this series of stories discussed cinematic culture, with each article focusing on a different genre. While the art is specific to the rom-com or mystery genre, both have the film strip border, representative of the series as a whole.

All works are drawn digitally using Procreate. To read any of the stories a work accompanies, click on any individual illustration.
